COMING UP...

DJ Ali Shaheed Muhammad
(A Tribe Called Quest)
+ support from DJ EMILY RAWSON + hosted by Big Ted

Fri 1 Feb
Lee Scratch" Perry + Laid Blak
Sat 9 & Sun 10 Feb
Together with the two MCs Q-Tip and Phife Dawg, DJ and producer Ali Shaheed Muhammad is one third of A Tribe Called Quest, one of the best and most influential hip hop groups of all time. He's responsible for more classics than most rap stars have released tracks. As a producer, he's the foundation of A Tribe Called Quest's success subsequently influencing a generation of rappers and producers to come: without Ali producers such as Jay Dee, Madlib and Pharell/Neptunes would have never existed. Don't miss the legendary pioneer live at the Jazz Cafe.   Grammy award-winning reggae and dub artist Lee "Scratch" Perry returns to the Jazz Cafe for two exclusive nights. "The Upsetter" has been a highly influential figure in the development and acceptance of reggae and dub in Jamaica over the last 30 years, and his on the edge creative genius remains evident in his own solo albums of the 1970's through his steady stream of mind boggling releases of the 1980's.

Joining him live at the Jazz Cafe is Omar Offendum, the Syrian-American hip-hop artist who is currently hard at work on several new projects while touring to promote his solo release 'SyrianamericanA'.   Foreign Beggars have touched down on just about every continent, supporting the likes of The Prodigy, Amy Winehouse, Snoop Dogg and the Wu Tang Clan along the way. Their legendary live show has left crowds fevered and frenzied as the group seamlessly blend grime, dubstep, drum and bass and rap music. 2012 saw the release of not one, but two full length projects on Deadmau5′s Mau5trap Records; 2013 is going to be a huge year.

FROM OUR FRIENDS...

1995
Camden Barfly / Thu 21 Mar

Spearhead of a new French rap generation which knows draws from its roots whilst forging ahead, 1995 delivers their eagerly awaited first album "Paris Sud Minute" After two successful EPs and hundreds of shows, the group concentrated on the recording of their first long format. The result forces the respect and refocuses on the music. 1995 even goes beyond strictly hip hop limited territory : "Jet Lag" and the Japanese influenced production, "103" instrumental track blazing far further what we're used to in the rap game... Bottom line, we have a first album that should already be a classic. Catch their debut London show here at the Barfly!

Nik & Jay

After more than a decade working the Danish music scene pop/hip-hop duo Nik & Jay set their sights on the UK. Undeniably catchy songs like "Hot!" and "I Love Ya" are brought to life through their compelling lyrics and heart-pounding beats which has seen them gain widespread popularity. Don't miss them live in London!

Shuggie Otis
The Forum / Sat 11 May

Compared with Hendrix and BB King at the age of 15, Shuggie's stand out works are the two expansive, genre-defying, deeply curious albums, 1971's "Freedom Flight" and 1974's "Inspiration Information". The records floored Sly Stone, gave the Brothers Johnson their most enduring hit ("Strawberry Letter 23") and predated the stylistic synthesist Prince by half a decade. His music is passion personified and you would have to be deaf not to hear it. Do NOT miss this.
